Sharing is caring!

I’ve lived in the Dallas Metroplex for over 3 years.  Despite my love for adventure and travel, I have only been to downtown Dallas once!  Isn’t’ that sad?  Suburbia and mommyhood is my daily life.  And when we travel we fly somewhere far away.  However, when my best friend came to visit without kids we wanted a full girls night out; to break out of our normal routine and hit the town.

Itinerary for a great night out:

  • Bike around downtown
  • Tour the Dallas Art Museum
  • Concert on the Green (Klyde Warren Park)
  • Velvet Tacos

Without too much planning we arrived in downtown Dallas and parked outside the art museum. We immediately saw bikes to rent parked on the side of the road (spin bikes).  With a bit of trouble, we downloaded the app and unlocked the bikes (for only $1 for 60 minutes!).  It was a beautiful night over 85 degrees and clear (in November if you can believe it!).  We had no idea where to go, so whichever road seems the flashiest we took that path.  We found an awesome giant eyeball, some cool old buildings, a church, a couple of parks and had a blast feeling like a kid again.  This was such a quick way to get a feel for the town, do some window shopping and get out heart rate up in the process!

We ended back at the Dallas Art Museum.  The museum always free!  Daily hours are open from 10-5.  They are only open past 5 pm on Thursdays. We headed to the top floor and meandered all the way down.  I am not an art fanatic, but I found plenty to look at, be interested in and enjoy.  We experienced sculpture, realism, modern art, dishes, Asian, European and American.  The variety provided great engagement for something new and different to look at around every corner.  In about an hour we were able to see most everything and had our fill of art.

We stepped outside to hear a Jazz concert happening at Klyde Warren park up the street, so we wandered that way and listened for a bit.  It was such lovely weather and being outside breathing in the city was so different from my norm.  I loved it.  The whole park was beautiful.  It is built over a freeway, so if you wander to the ends of it, you can watch the cars driving right underneath it!  There are food trucks, game tables, magazine racks, tables and chairs to eat or chat with.  I’ve taken my kids to this park before and the play equipment is amazing along with the splash pad for cooling off on a hot day.

We drove a couple of miles up the road “Velvet Tacos” to eat.  This was recommended by a friend and at the time I wondered why she would recommend something so far away.  But after eating there I realize it is worth it!  It was so unique and delicious.  We ordered 6 different kinds of tacos (brunch tacos, Tikki Marsala taco, steak and portobello mushrooms, pineapple and pork, etc).  The sodas were even unique and exciting.  They had all real sugar sodas with flavors like coconut lime, mango, pina, and cream soda, along with the classics of root beer, cola, and lemonade.  To top off an amazing meal, the red velvet cake (is that where it gets it name?!?) was divine!

Other Options in Dallas:

If you can get downtown before 4, there is also a free trolley around the downtown and uptown areas of Dallas.

The place where JFK was shot is also really close.  There is a memorial on the street and a museum on the 6th floor (where the shooter was) of an office building.
