Since my daughter loves all things girly, it seemed only natural to introduce her to beauty care by throwing a Spa Birthday Party for her.
We love having birthday parties at our own home. We pick a theme, some activities, and food and invite all the friends we want. I don’t worry too much about making it Pinterest-worthy with the decor. My focus is always on my child, their likes, their excitement, their friends and their fun.
Throwing birthday parties at our own home saves us lots of money since we have 4 kids with a birthday every year! Along with the money savings, I also find the kids have more fun planning, helping to set up and enjoying their friends at home parties.
When my daughter turned 6, she wanted a party where we did our nails. I had just had my 4th baby a month earlier, so I told myself to keep it simple. I kept telling myself to keep it simple, but I think it got a little out of hand! My daughter definitely loved it so that is what is important.
Food
Since our theme was a spa party, we were focused on activities. We only served snacks for the guests. My daughter picked her favorite snacks.
One of my goals in doing an at-home party is to have the birthday kid work with me to prepare decor or games. A couple of days before the party, we dipped marshmallows in candy glitter. When they dried we added a tootsie roll to the top to create these cute ‘nail polish’ cupcake toppers.
We made the cupcakes together and frosted them as a team. I love spending time creating the party as we talk about the year past and the year to come. A bowl of popcorn looked like a bubble bath for Barbie to add to the theme.
Decor
I am not a decorator. I know my limitations, so I bought a few garland and puffballs from the dollar tree and called it good. My daughter loved puffing them out and hanging them up. so it was a win for both of us.
Party favors
Instead of giving favors at the end of the party, each guest had a stash of supplies when they arrived.
Each girl has a mirror, a pedicure set (nail clippers, file, toe separator, pumice stone), a hair wrap, unique washcloth, and a facemask brush. They also picked out a nail polish of their choice. The brought a small bottle of homemade sugar scrub for future spa treatments.
My daughter and I also made homemade lip balm in a tub. Similar to this recipe. My daughter enjoyed making it and filling the tubs. She especially loved thinking of each friend as she personalized each label by hand.
Dressups
Party guests were invited to wear a robe. We provided flip flips and all the supplies for our spa treatments.
Activities
Decorating Flip Flops
The girls started the party by tying strips of fabric onto flipflops. I cut scraps of pink, purple and blue zebra stripes. The girls tied them on to flipflops of their choosing
Facial
I made an edible face mask with oatmeal, cottage cheese, cocoa. There are many options online, I just picked one I have the ingredients for. The girls squealed with disgust as we applied the chocolate with a foam brush. The cucumbers for the eyes were the final touch for some fun photos. We dipped the washcloths in hot water from my crock pot and wiped it all off.
Hand care
Satin hands from Mary Kay was a simple way to create a quick hand care. A beaded scrub rinsed with the washcloths combined with a rich moisturizer gave every girl silky smooth hands.
Manicure
Each girl picked her favorite color of polish (to take home for touch-ups). All the moms helped apply the polish.
Foot care
The girls dipped their feet in hot water foot baths and I applied a homemade sugar scrub. Moms helped to trim and paint each girls toes.
Cake & presents
Typically, we play more games at a kid’s birthday party, but this one was full of other activities. After all our spa treatments, it was time for presents and cake. The best part is the free play with pampered princesses after the party.
Every girl went home with painted nails, clean hands, feet and face and a bag full of goodies to repeat the process.
Cost of a DIY Spa Birthday Party
The cost of all these treatments at a spa would be hundreds of dollars and I was able to create it all for under $75 for 10 girls.
- Decor: $5
- Food and Cupcakes: $10
- Spa Supplies (bought at the dollar store) 10 girls/ $5 each= $50
- Flip Flops: 10 girls x$2 @ Hobby Lobby= $10
Total DIY Spa Birthday Party Cost: $75
Funny story about a Spa Birthday Party
When we were creating the invitation for the party, I asked if I should put Beauty Party. My daughter said, What a “bootie”. I laughed thinking it was funny we were throwing a bootie party for little girls, so I changed the name to Spa birthday party. Since she had never been to a spa before, she kept forgetting what it was called and said “Bra Party”. Sounds so scandalous that I threw a BRA and BOOTIE party for my 6-year-old.
