Through the Women in Travel Summit, I was able to Explore Lawrence, Kansas with other travel bloggers. This virtual tour peaked my interest in a trip to the midwest and I cant wait to explore this town in person.
How to get to Lawrence Kansas
Lawrence is 40 minutes to the west of Kansas City. The closest airport is in Kansas City (code: MCI). You can drive through on a road trip or easily access from the airport.
What to do in Lawrence
When you get to Lawrence, make the first stop the Lawrence Visitors Center. Get information about events, ideas of what you’d like to do and lots of colorful photo-ops.
Be sure to stroll down Downtown Lawrence as it is one of the most beautiful Historic Downtown districts in the country. I can’t wait to spent the day exploring this area.
Shopping
Massachusetts Street (abbreviated Mass Street) offers multiple shops for your entertainment and excitement. Stop and grab a float at the counter of Mass Street Soda. Take home one of over 1000 varieties of craft soda. Waxman Candles has been in business since the 1970s and will give you a huge variety of candle scents and handmade ceramics. Body Truth Soap apothecary makes spa tonic soaps all by hand. Don’t miss this soap made with all-natural ingredients.
Activities
I can’t wait to spend a night eating and playing games at the RPG. The RPG offers a library of over 1000 board games. Mix that with food and a full bar and you have a night to remember. You can even rent a board game (for only $4) and bring it home and order carryout! This is my kind of venue!
My kids would love to experience an escape room game at Breakout Lawrence. Puzzles and problems to solve to get your next hint to break out of the room. This is family friendly fun and adventure.
After a long day of sightseeing in Lawerence, I want to soak at the outdoor tub and sauna at Mud and Lotus. They offer affordable rates for yourself of a party of 2 or 3. Who wants a moms night out?
Learn about the culture of the area at the Watkins Museum of History . Here you can see and interact with exhibits and learn information about the history of Kansas.
The Arts
Lawrence is a hidden gem with opportunities to watch performances. Operas, plays, concerts, and live music is abundant.
- Check out Lawrence Art Center which includes a theater, wall art of local artists.
- Walk through Spencer Museum of Arts where admission is always free and a variety of art is on display. (Museum is closed for summer of 2021)
- The Leid Center is a 2000 seat theater that show everything from comedians to Broadway musicals.
- Theater Lawrence shows many different plays throughout the year, so check to see what is playing when you are visiting.
Sports
Inventor of basketball, James Naismith was the first coach of the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Go on a Jayhawks Tour Experience for a unique tour in Lawrence. My husband would love to see more of the history of basketball!
